Originally from Utah, Matt and his wife, Lezlie, moved to Colorado in 1994 and to Salida in 1997. They have two children. Ethan was born in 2000 and their daughter Quinn was born in 2002. Lezlie is a Marketing and Public Relations Consultant.
Dr. Burkley is the Physician Advisor for Monarch Ski Patrol. He also volunteers at the annual 9Health Fair providing skin cancer checks and with the Tar Wars program - a tobacco-effects education program for kids. Dr. Burkley is an Instructor for Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics and is a Clinical Instructor for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

- Wilderness Medicine
Personal interests include time with family, skiing, biking, gardening, and travel.
